Today in History: Britain Kills 21 Nigerians, 37 badly injured in a protest – November 18, 1949.

It is exactly 73 years ago today since the British Police shot dead 21 defenceless Igbo workers of Enugu coal/Iva Valley Miners for no reason. Their crime was that they demanded for a pay rise.

21 died instantly, 37 were severely injured.

Today at New Market Roundabout Enugu, an everlasting monument can still be seen as a mark of eternal respect for the brave Igbo men who were brave enough to stand against the British tyranny.

“Onuigbo” a song by Chief Dr. Stephen Osita Osadebe was in memory of defenceless 21 workers of Enugu Coal/Iva valley Miners killed by the British Police in November 1949. Their crime was that they demanded for a pay rise.
