Kano’s Ganduje still battling old shadows
A man whose achievements have been blighted by the Gandollar scandal and his ugly feud with the former Emir of Kano Lamido Sanusi, Governor Umar Ganduje has weathered his storms really well.
Infrastructure
Completion of various ongoing construction works, as well as rehabilitation of bridges across the state, including minor and major works, such as constituency projects and completion of age-long abandoned projects; Purchase of 3 blocks consisting of six 3-bedroom flats with 8-rooms boys quarters, adjacent to New Giginyu General Hospital Nassarawa Local Government; Ganduje has commissioned the Gada Biyu Electrification Project executed by his administration at the cost of over N500 million. The project aims to ensure stable power supply to Gada Biyu and surrounding communities in Doguwa local government area of the state; Construction of Golden Jubilee Monument at Lodge Road Ring Road by Govt. Education
Construction of new Classrooms and toilets renovation and provision of furniture for Schools; Through the Teachers’ Upgrade, which targets teachers without teaching qualifications in primary schools, 25,486 teachers have upgraded themselves to be suited to teach their charges; Constructed 150 blocks of 301 classrooms in 44 local governments; Renovated 653 blocks of 1,288 classrooms across 44 local governments and provision of 15,250 3-seater desks and teachers furniture across 44 local governments.
Health
Health is key to enhancing productivity and the welfare of the people of Kano. In strengthening health institutions, priority was placed on completion of on-going construction of health infrastructure, ensuring availability and timely supply of drugs, procurement of some medical equipment, recruitment of health personnel and promotion of innovative health financing in addition to general expansion/rehabilitation works at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and procurement of certain specialised medical equipment.
Moreover, the state government is committed to upgrading 12 Primary Health centres to standard cottage and general hospitals at Kiru, Takai, Tsanyawa, Ungogo, Garko, K/Dangora, Madobi, Walawar Sarari, Sharada, Tariwa, Rikadawa and Tofa.
Completion of construction works and commissioning of Giginyu General Hospital, Paediatric Hospital at Zoo Road, Gezawa Post Midwifery College and College of Nursing Madobi.
Government has also continued to promote preventive healthcare alongside curative intervention, in collaboration with development partners, including strengthening the control of HIV/AIDs, tuberculosis, polio eradication, malaria control, cholera, measles control and other child killer diseases in the state.
Furthermore, the sum of N258.6 million has been expended for the general development of our various health Institutions of learning in the state; Renovation of Yadakunya Leprosy Hospital, completion of Goron Dutse Community Hospital; Renovation/Upgrading Chidari Basic Health Centre (BHC) to comprehensive health centre (CHC); Upgrading Getso Comprehensive Health Centre to Cottage Hospital, renovation of existing structures and construction of additional structures at Filin Mushe Maternal Child Health Clinic, Gwale LGA; Upgrading Makoda Model PHC to Cottage Hospital; Renovation and construction works at School of Health Technology, Kano; Renovation and construction at School of Health Technology, Bebeji; Renovation of School of Nursing temporary hostel; Revalidation and continuation HSDP II project at School of Technology, and Ministry of Health headquarters, Kano; Renovation of 105 PHCs in collaboration with MNCH2, a DFID; Procurement of specialised equipment for Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital (MAWSH) and Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital (MMSH) including CT Scan, Mammography machine, anaesthetic machine etc.; Procurement of equipment for 11 PHCs built by Dangote Foundation at Sabon Sara and Imam Halliru PHCs;
Government conducted Free Eye Care Programme in which 44,000 patients benefitted, 51,200 collected drugs, 10,000 received eye medicated glasses, 541 underwent Trachoma surgery and 2,504 had cataract surgery; Distribution of equipment to 137 Health facilities in the State in collaboration with MNCH2; Procurement of 20no. SSDs for 20 selected PHCs in 20 selected wards in Kano; Procurement of equipment in collaboration with VSF (oxygen concentrator, multi parameter cardiac monitor, suction machine, ambu bags, operating table, artery forceps, gallipots, kidney dishes etc.; Established Contributory Healthcare Management Agency whose primary role is to cater for the health care needs of public servants; Employed over 400 critical staff, over 70 medical doctors, over 120 nurses and a considerable number of pharmacists and laboratory scientists. This is in addition to continuation of sponsorship of training of healthcare workers for undergraduate and postgraduate courses, within and outside the country.
Commerce & Manufacturing
While Ganduje has tottered on the edge most times, his moves at commerce and manufacturing have been encouraging. Some of them include sustained effort of providing independent power plant and improvement of general infrastructure, which to a large extent boost confidence of industrialists and businessmen willing to invest in the State; Completing renovation of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Cooperatives and Tourism; Development and Hosting of Enterprise portal, which consists of digital business directory and e-Commerce; Redesigning of Kantin Kwari and construction of new shops and Yan Tebura Mall; Signing of MoU for the construction of Kano Economic City located at Dangwauro with Brains and Hammers; Payment of 1250 graduates from the Entrepreneurship Development Centre N50,000 start-up capital; Acquisition of piece of land at Minjibir for the development of Northwest Tourism Empowerment Centre by the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation and the establishment of Kantin Kwari Caretaker Committee to oversee the activities of the market.
Agriculture
Agriculture has been accorded a priority status as a result of special focus in the governments diversification strategy, because of its inherent potential toward realisation of the food security and enhanced revenues.
So far, Gandujes administration has been able to renovate nine retail outlet stores in selected local governments, procure and install new line of production of fertiliser of 20 30 metric tonnes per-hour capacity at KASCO; Construction of additional new retail stores in 8no selected Local Governments; Construction of new office block at Dakata factory Nassarawa LGA; Purchase of trucks and other vehicles for KASCO worth N35,190,000
Women Development
The Ganduje administration has duly implemented various Women Development Programmes aimed at enhancing access to productive resources and entrepreneurship skills for the poor and vulnerable women; Disbursement of agric loans for women farmers, conducting of various Women empowerment programmes, completion and renovation of lost but found Hostel at Sabuwar Gandu, Remand Home G/Dutse and reactivation of women vocational centres across the state; Equipping Gyadi-Gyadi Vocational Women Centre where grassroots women are being trained on vocational and acquisition skills; Participating of the ministry in the empowerment training of rural women and youth in Nigeria; Training of 100 women on tomato preservation in collaboration with Bank of Industry at Gyadi-Gyadi Women Centre; Collaborating with the UNFPA and Fistula Foundation to empower 25 fistula survivors etc.
Water Supply and Rural Development
The administration of Ganduje has been able to award contract for the construction of a 90million-litre per day dam at Wudil; Continuation of 8 small towns’ water works (Falgore, Albasu, Makoda, Gadanya, Minjibir, Bunkure, Ganduje and Tofa; Undertaking 88 mini-town water supply projects, two locations in each of the 44 local governments; Improvement of supply of safe and portable water to the communities of Tiga, Rano and Rurum; Award of a contract for the supply and installation of high lift pumps at Tiga; Rehabilitation and expansion of Bichi Township Water System to restore adequate supply of potable drinking water; Supply of 3700 metric tonnes of Aluminium Sulphate and 300 drums of Super Flux for the Water Board, amongst others.
For all the good points he has scored, several cases of kidnapping in Kano including of young children and villagers, has created panic among residents.
Gandujes constant political bickering with his predecessor and former boss, Rabiu Kwankwaso has succeeded in splitting the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state into two factions.
Drug abuse, acute water scarcity (in Dakata, Rimin Kebbe, Zango, Gama, Brigade, Hotoro, Kawo and virtually all of Kano eastern bye-pass) remains and the recklessness of commercial tricycle riders in the state has remained.
