Kogi State is ushering in a new era of opportunity with the groundbreaking ceremony of the Barefoot Renewable Energy College, the first of its kind in Nigeria. This momentous occasion was celebrated in Lokoja, the state capital known for its scenic confluence of the River Niger and River Benue, in the presence of the Honorable Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, the Director General of the Energy Commission, Dr. Abdullahi Mustafa, and other distinguished guests.Chief Uche Nnaji emphasized the importance of this project, describing it as a crucial step in addressing the need for skilled manpower in the renewable energy sector. He referred to the college as a “superstore for brilliant, skilled youths” who will be trained to meet the growing demands of the renewable energy industry as Nigeria joins the global transition to climate-friendly, clean energy sources.
Kogi State, a historic region bordered by ten other states, has faced significant challenges in recent years, including devastating floods in 2012 and 2022 that caused over N63 billion in damages. These disasters left the people of Kogi impoverished and hopeless, with many youths migrating to other states in search of better opportunities. However, the newly elected Governor, His Excellency Ahmed Usman Ododo, is determined to rebuild the state through his “Renewed Hope” agenda, focusing on new skills, enterprises, industries, and opportunities.
The Barefoot Renewable Energy College is a groundbreaking initiative by the federal government to empower Nigerian youths with the training and skills needed for the renewable energy sector. This world-class institution will offer specialized training in all forms of renewable energy, including hydro, solar, wind, and green hydrogen. It will attract experts, researchers, and alternative energy enthusiasts from around the globe to Kogi, where they will train and equip students with hands-on experience in these cutting-edge technologies.
The establishment of this college will not only provide educational opportunities but will also stimulate local businesses and the economy as the influx of visitors and increased activities boost the state’s commercial landscape. Kogi State is set to become a hub for specialized training and skill development, supporting the growing labor market for alternative energy.
Governor Ododo expressed his deep gratitude to the President of Nigeria and the Honorable Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology for selecting Kogi State as the site for this prestigious institution. He highlighted the college’s potential to significantly impact Kogi’s economy and position the state as a center for learning and research in renewable energy.
Special thanks were extended to Chief Uche Nnaji, whose dynamic leadership at the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology has led to numerous new projects and groundbreaking achievements within just one year.
Parents and educators are encouraged to inform their children and young adults about the exciting new opportunities in renewable energy. The fields of innovation, science, and technology hold a promising future for Nigeria.
Nigeria shall rise again.
