With the Federal Government’s plans through the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), to move cargoes in barges from Lagos ports to Onitsha River Port, there are moves to make the Onitsha River Port a gateway to the South-East and South-South economies.

The Chairman of Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Mr Vincent Ezekwueme told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu  that this latest move  is a welcome development and a step in the right direction.

He said that the decision would definitely ease the hydra-headed daily gridlock being witnessed in Apapa and its environs in Lagos State.

“CLO extols the Managing Director of NIWA, Chief George Moghalu, over this wise and patriotic decision for movement of cargoes by barges from Lagos ports to Onitsha River Port.

“This singular move will ease traffic in Apapa and ameliorate excruciating sufferings by importers.

“There is no doubt it will be a harbinger toward resuscitating decrepit Onitsha River Port for optimal performances,’’ he said.

The chairman noted that when Onitsha River Port becomes operational with full capacity, it would boost economic activities within the South-East.

Ezekwueme said that it would also create jobs and wealth, generate income for government and reduce youth restiveness and crimes.

He also commended Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Nigeria Ports Authority and all those who contributed immensely toward giving Onitsha River Port its deserved pride of place.

“I pray for urgent implementation of this laudable project and subsequent upgrade of Onitsha River Port as final port of destination for South-East designated containers.

“This will reduce unnecessary and avoidable expenses for transporting containers from Lagos ports and Port Harcourt port to South-East.

“It will also invariably reduce cost of goods and services generally,’’ he added.
