Obeagu Town is a popular agrarian community in Awgu local government area of Enugu State, Nigeria.
Obeagu has an undulating topography like most Towns in Enugu State, from where the name of our state was derived.
A boundary community between Awgu and Oji River local government areas, bordering Achi , Amoli, Ugbo, Mmaku and Awgunta communities. She’s also blessed with a rich forest reserve and arable land for agriculture and the indigenes used to be predominantly farmers, until the coming of the Catholic missionaries.
Story has it that the coming of the missionaries changed the paradigm , the way of life and worship of the people.
With the missionary Head quarter at our neighboring community Mmaku, they extended their Evangelical tentacles towards our direction, and that changed our history forever.
A centenary celebration is not a child’s play. It is a commemoration that a century has passed, and we are grateful to these early missionaries whom we neither know, nor may ever be chanced to see , and convey our gratitude
Education is the bedrock of any meaningful development world wide, and that’s the reason we are grateful to our progenitors, founding fathers and missionaries of St Theresa Catholic Church Obeagu, who birthed the idea of establishing the central school.
In the course of their evangelization drive in the late 19th century, found out that educating their target audience would be a masterstroke. They explored this noble idea and in the year of our Lord 1919, established the first indigenous primary school in our community, St Theresa Primary school which latter transmuted to the Central School Obeagu, when government took over management of schools.
The central school over time begat other siblings, the Ijime hill top school and the Community secondary school, and the growth has been impressive with so many accomplishments and academic laurels to their credit.
The school has as her children, many accomplished men and women in various fields of human endeavor.
Today we have Artisans, Technicians, Engineers, Lawyers, Doctors, Professors, Programmers, writers, Journalists, Business Men/women, Reverend Fathers and Reverend Sisters, Pastors etc all having at one stage or the other passed through the school.
This year 2019 marks the completion of one whole century, since the establishment of this great school, and as part of the centenary celebration, the Obeagu progressive Union, Lagos branch under my leadership, in conjunction with our home parish, St. Theresa Catholic Church, Obeagu, sees it as an honour and opportunity to galvanize all former alumni of this great institution, to show gratitude in whatever way they can, to the school that made us what we are today
The celebration proper would be coming up , much latter this year and we expect everyone to key in appropriately.
May the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, St. Theresa our Patron Saint, be and abide with us , now and forever more,
Amen.
Signed
Prince Odunze Ik Okolo
Chairman, Obeagu progressive Union, (O.P.U) Lagos branch
