The Chairman, Awgu Local Government Council of Enugu State, Hon Stanley Okeke has amongst 8 other chairmen in the state been honoured with a merit award of excellence “as the Best Performing Local Government chairmen in Nigeria for the year 2018.

The Local Government development award which was organised by Segnip Promotions with support from the Office of the Secretary General of the Federation, Department of States and Local Government Affairs, was held yesterday at the International Conference Centre Abuja.

Hon Okeke in a brief remark after receiving the award, thanked the organisers for finding him worthy of the honour.

Okeke who dedicated the award to the Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi (Gburugburu) and the good people of Awgu Local Government, priased them for their continuous support and prayers which has culminated to the achievements for which he was being honoured.

He thanked Governor Ugwuanyi for carrying the local government councils in the state along, encouraging them and giving necessary support for the overall interest of the people.

“I take this honour as a challenge and I will ensure that I do my best for my people wherever I find myself. It is heart warming to know that the little one I am doing is being noticed by the public.”

“Enugu State indeed, is in the hands of God, i appreciate the governor for believing in us, and for helping us achieve our goals, the grassroots so far have benefited from empowerment programmes and other development projects in the areas of education, health, ICT and others. I will continue to do my best as long there is life,” he noted.

Earlier, the CEO/ MD, Segnip Promotions, Engr. Kayode Adegbayo said the noble idea of rewarding exemplary leadership at the grassroots was to stimulate fair competition for service delivery at the local government level.

Adegbayo said while some local government chairmen merely fold their arms complaining about poor funding and economic crunch, others made the best use of whatever situation they find themselves.

He admonished the recipients not to see this as a mere gift for celebration, but a call to greater service. A reminder that they must continue to do their best at every given time to the benefit of their people.

He further called on federal and State governments to strengthen the local governments system in order to create more impacts on the lives of the people.

“The grassroots needs development. If the local government is adequately strengthened, most of the youths will contribute more to the development of Nigeria,” he said.
