“I Have Never Accepted the Limits of My Inherited Circumstances,” Says Mbah as Alma Mater Confers Honorary Doctorate
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM – The University of East London (UEL) has conferred an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD), honoris causa, on the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, in recognition of his outstanding leadership, public service, education reforms, entrepreneurship, and visionary efforts in transforming Enugu into one of Africa’s most promising investment destinations.
The prestigious honour was bestowed during the university’s graduation ceremony at its Docklands Campus in London, where Mbah’s remarkable journey from law student to business leader and reform-driven governor was celebrated as a powerful example of the impact of education, innovation, and purposeful leadership.
Presenting the citation, UEL’s Vice-Provost (Business) and Executive Dean of the Royal Docks School of Business and Law, Professor Fatima Ana-Diab, described Mbah’s career as a compelling testament to how education can shape leaders capable of driving meaningful economic and social transformation.
“More than two decades ago, Peter Mbah walked these halls as a law student, developing the knowledge, determination and leadership qualities that would take him from UEL to the Nigerian Bar, the corporate world and ultimately to public office as Governor of Enugu State,” she said.
She highlighted Mbah’s distinguished academic record and leadership roles while at UEL, where he served as President of the Students’ Law Society, led reforms that earned the society recognition as the university’s Most Productive Society of the Year, and represented the institution in international academic competitions.
Beyond his achievements in law and business, the university paid particular attention to Mbah’s ambitious governance agenda in Enugu State since assuming office in May 2023.
According to Ana-Diab, his administration has embarked on bold reforms and strategic investments designed to unlock economic growth, improve infrastructure, expand access to quality healthcare, strengthen education, and create a competitive environment capable of attracting local and foreign investment.
She noted that under Mbah’s leadership, Enugu is rapidly emerging as a hub for innovation, enterprise, and sustainable development, driven by policies aimed at positioning the state as a preferred investment destination not only in Nigeria but across Africa.
“At the heart of his approach is a belief in the transformative power of education,” Ana-Diab said. “His administration has invested significantly in education and skills development, seeking to equip young people with the knowledge, competence and confidence required to thrive in a rapidly changing global economy.”
The university further commended the governor’s commitment to human capital development, digital innovation, infrastructure renewal, and economic diversification, describing these initiatives as critical foundations for attracting investment and stimulating long-term prosperity.
Highlighting Mbah’s accomplishments as founder of Pinnacle Oil and Gas and his previous service as Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development and Chief of Staff in Enugu State, UEL noted that his private and public sector experience has helped shape a development model focused on economic competitiveness, productivity and inclusive growth.
“For our graduates today, his journey offers a powerful example of where a UEL education can lead,” Ana-Diab added. “It reminds us that leadership is not defined by position alone, but by the ability to create opportunities, inspire progress and deliver meaningful change for society.”
Mbah: Building an Enugu That Competes Globally for Investment:
In his acceptance speech, Governor Mbah reflected on the values of innovation, resilience, service and education that have shaped his journey, while reaffirming his commitment to building an economy that creates opportunities and improves lives.
“One quality has always mattered to me: the willingness to disrupt. I have never been particularly interested in accepting the limits of my inherited circumstances,” he said.
The governor stressed that true leadership must be rooted in purpose and driven by a commitment to serving others.
“Imagination is not enough. There must be purpose. For me, that purpose is service because there will always be moments when ambition alone is not enough. At those moments, it is important to have something greater than yourself that inspires you to keep going,” he stated.
Mbah emphasized that education remains the cornerstone of his administration’s development strategy and a key driver of Enugu’s economic transformation agenda.
“Education enlarges our capacity to transform the world. What we are given must somehow enlarge the possibilities available to others,” he said.
He noted that Enugu is making unprecedented investments in education, technology, innovation hubs and skills development as part of broader efforts to prepare young people for a knowledge-based economy and attract high-value investments into the state.
The governor’s administration has consistently projected Enugu as a destination for business, industry, technology, tourism and innovation, leveraging strategic investments in critical infrastructure, security, ease of doing business and human capital development to position the state as a gateway for economic opportunities in Nigeria and Africa.
Expressing gratitude to the University of East London, Mbah described the institution as a significant influence on his academic and professional development.
He said the honorary doctorate represented not only a personal achievement but also an affirmation of the values of education, innovation, leadership and service that continue to drive his vision of transforming Enugu into a globally competitive economy and a leading investment destination in Africa.
