Archbishop Onaiyekan
‘Our attention has been drawn to a post making the rounds on the internet that His Eminence John Cardinal Onaiyekan, during his homily at Church of Assumption Asokoro urged Nigerians to “accept the result of the 2023 presidential election as announced by INEC.”
‘This is to let the general public know that such post is misleading. The homily in question was preached at the 10 AM Mass on the 26th of February 2023. This was a day after the presidential election, before the collation of the result, which started later in the evening of that day, and days before the announcement of the results were made in the early hours of March 1st. This appeal was made with the belief then shared by most Nigerians that the process and the outcome of the elections will be free, fair and credible as promised by INEC.
Unfortunately, the result turned out to be totally different.
The author of the post presents it as if His Eminence made this appeal after the results of the presidential election was announced by INEC thereby making it seem as though His Eminence is appealing to Nigerians to accept the now announced result of an election whose credibility has been called to serious question.
After a tragically questionable election, His Eminence blatantly refuses to be fraudulently drafted into boosting a non existent credibility of results and the consequent legitimacy of the declared winner. His Eminence is a firm lover of peace, but NEVER at the expense of TRUTH AND JUSTICE. God bless Nigeria.
