Over the years, the Senator representing Enugu West Senatorial District, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has enjoyed great influence, crowned by unrestricted generosity that has made him one of the leading lights to look up to for a better Nigeria. In the Southeast, long maligned and boxed from having any huge say in Nigeria’s Presidency or being a huge part of plans to occupy it, he has become an enigma of sorts; not because of his longevity in the National Assembly or his charisma, but because of his capacity and his seamless fusing into the 21^st century fabric of the Igbo nation and all that it holds dear.

For long, he has played the transformative light of social and political emancipation within and outside his constituency. Indeed, the circumstances surrounding the birth and naming of this enviable leader discredited any rebuttal claim against it being the birth of a new nation. He has touched his constituency positively. Senator Ekweremadu’s quality representation at the senate resonates with his people; he fulfills the aspirations and consciousness of his constituents. For the time he has spent in the Senate, he has taken his people from the labyrinth of neglect into the symmetrical terrain of infrastructural development.

Since his entrance into the house in 2003, he has been chairman of the board of trustees/founder of the Ikeoha Foundation, upon his entry into public service as chairman of Aninri LGA in 1997. The Foundation was incorporated in 2004 and has since given annual scholarships to hundreds of students from Enugu West Senatorial Zone, as well as micro-credit to farmer groups in the zone, not the kind of vote buying micro-credit that was recently launched by the APC led government in Osun State. Ikeoha  foundation also organises other projects like vocational and adult education, quiz and sports competitions.

Ekweremadu’s youth and women empowerment programmes are legendary. He attracted the establishment of five youth development centres, one in each of the five local government areas that comprise his Enugu West constituency. He has remained a rallying point for many politicians in his state, particularly in Enugu West.

With the collaboration of the state government, the senator, who is currently the deputy Senate President, has put his shoulders to the oars and is doing everything in his power to change the face of his constituency with various infrastructural projects, ranging from dualisation of existing roads to construction of new ones and provision of potable water.

Since his first sojourn in the house, Ekweremadu has sponsored his fair share of bills – to put it nobly. Some of them include the; Civil Process Servers Bill, February 2010; Private Detectives and Investigators Bill, April 2010; State of the Nation Address Bill, February 2008; River Basins’ Amendment Bill, 2008; Federal Land Registry (General Provisions) Bill, February 2008, amongst others.

Also, Ekweremadu co-sponsored a number of bills, as well, among which are the Nigeria Police Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, April 2008; Abolition of Discrimination Against Women Bill, February 2008; National Human Rights Commission Act (Amendment) Bill, February 2008; Legal Aide Act (Amendment) Bill, February 2008; Elimination of Violence in Society Bill, November 2008; Legal Practitioners Act (Amendment) Bill, March 2008; Criminal Justice (Victims’ Remedies) Bill, March 2008 etc.

The erudite lawyer has some motions to his name, as well. Some of them include; Absence of the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria (Senate Resolution in March 2010) which triggered a chain of legislative interventions that saw to the emergence of an Acting President; the Passing Away of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, March 2010; the Surging Incidence of Kidnapping and Hostage-taking in Nigeria,  July 2009; Outbreak of Hostilities in Jos; Menace of Gully Erosion and Landslide in the South East, 2007 etc.

Some of the motions he has co-sponsored motions include the Abandonment of Nigerian Ship Crew in Captivity in Somalia, Deplorable State of Nigerian Roads etc.

Recently, Ekweremadu moved to sponsor the state police bill that would decentralise the nation’s policing system. Ekweremadu, who slammed the current system as “dysfunctional and unsuitable for a federal system, due to the rising insecurity and killings in Nigeria,” said that the killings had continued mainly because the federating states were not constitutionally allowed to recruit, train, and equip enough manpower for the security of lives and property of citizens in their states. The bill will also address the fears of Nigerians opposed to state police. Just like the Judiciary, the bill will provide for a central police service commission and, also, structure the state police services in ways that [make them] from abuse by any governor or state. It is also a bill we can conclude in record time. Thus, Ekeremadu has performed many oversight functions creditably, applying a combination of extant and common laws, rule books, constitution and judiciary pronouncements as a guiding principle on his legislative phenomena duties.

Indeed, Ekweremadu can be considered an enigma; undefeated, unfettered and courageous in fighting a course he believes right for the masses, despite attempts to intimidate and cower him into a course not in tandem with his. Many a-time, he has stood his ground to fight for justice, equity and rule of law.

Ekweremadu is an embodiment of leadership, political eminence; humbleness and willing service.

It is not in doubt that his achievements, commitment and loyalty to the party would boost the PDP’s chances and help it generate more votes in the state come 2019.

“Prior to his election, the lawmaker and former Chief of Staff to the Enugu State government felt the pulse of his people his declaration and in 2003, before the polls, he said: ” The reality of the situation of our time, the compelling need for quality representation and the urge to bring about the entire dimensions of our geo-political areas to the front burner of Nigeria national life has induced in some of us the actions resulting in the drive to partake of the exercises in one of the higher echelons of political leadership in the country, today.

“To that effect, I had considered valid factors and concluded that the urge for me to be a part of it all, principally for the purpose of genuine representation, equaled the zeal in the community of our people who have already decided to stake in everything to have their interests duly represented. Indeed, quality representation is all there is in democracy and it is within the province of due political aspiration that our people intend to send in the first eleven for the decisive years inclusive in the second segment of this democratic practice.

“I have for sometime considered what my people demanded as typifying quality representation and so came to the conclusion that what they seek, what they intend to represent and what they urge should be their lot, is to send in the best based on the appreciation of the terrain and the people. A deep interest in the upliftment of the people and a commitment to the efforts desired for the actualisation of the dreams of our people.

“[My mission is] to restore people’s faith in the concept of representative democracy as symbolized by the legislature, and more particularly within the context of federal representation whereby the federal legislator must only be seen as a real mouthpiece and knight for his people – initiating/influencing favourable legislation and mobilizing development resources – and not a distant sojourner in the seat of government, far removed from the realities, the needs and the aspirations of his people,” he assured.

Fifteen years since these proclamations, Ekweremadu has kept his word to the letter, projecting, protecting and representing his constituency in deed and word; collaborating and consulting all segments of his support base, strategically engaging relevant stakeholders, creating partnerships that continued on self-propulsion to bring projects and programmes to his constituency. This innovative leadership style has resulted in substantial development in his constituency.

OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS

• Over 12,000 women and youths have received basic education in our 36 Adult Literacy Centres
• Over 3, 547 students have completed their university education courtesy of our bursary scheme
• 56 undergraduate students are enjoying full university scholarship
• 15 schools, their quiz masters and deserving students have received different categories of awards including complete sets of science equipment, text and exercise books and financial assistance by participating in our annual secondary schools quiz competition
• 20,000 units of anti-malarial drugs distributed to malaria-endemic areas.
• 5,477 adult learners fitted with reading glasses
• 25 Community Volunteers trained on tubercle-vigilance
• Continuous awareness creation on HIV/Aids, TB, and Malaria
• 20 Co-operative societies supported with farming micro credit (to combat under-nutrition and expand livelihood options)
• 5,320 students have participated in our annual Under-18 Football Competition since 2009
• 4,250 women and youths (850 each from 5 LGAs) have been trained on modern agro farming
• Over 1000 beneficiaries have participated in our ICT Training Programme
• Over 6,000 widows have been supported with household equipment, agro inputs and financial assistance since 2007
• Engineering graduates have been supported to undergo training at the Science Equipment Development Institute, SEDI, Enugu.
